Meet Alex, a Senior at Cornell University studying Mechanical Engineering. Get to know more about Alex's experience working in Energy Systems Engineering at Raymond.
What has your experience at Raymond been like so far?
So far, my experience has been a positive look into the fascinating hidden world of logistics. From day-one, I felt like an engineer, not an intern. Through every step of the way, I am treated with the same amount of responsibility and respect as the full-time employees. My supervisors tasks me with projects that push my understanding: always challenging, never overwhelming. What I appreciate most about working at Raymond is its positive, inclusive, and understanding culture. Every person I meet at Raymond‑- from sales to test engineering-- is eager and excited to answer my questions so I can learn at every opportunity.
How are you applying what you study to your job here at Raymond?
Every day, Raymond encourages me to apply and expand upon all aspects of my mechanical engineering education. This depth is best illustrated by following a project through the engineering design process. Each task begins with comprehensive discussions with my mentor, other engineers, and sales representatives to define the user need and its constraints. From these discussions, I use my knowledge from coursework in statics, material properties, and dynamics to further quantify the problem. Each step of the process involves extensive communication, critical thinking, and patience, but I am always proud of the result!
What career advice would you give to others hoping to secure a future co-op/internship?
Based on my experience, communication is an essential skill. I believe all applicants should ask themselves two questions when hoping to secure a future position at Raymond: First ask, "what skills are required for this position?" Then, "How has my prior experience developed these skills and how can I communicate this on my resume or in an interview?" With these two questions sufficiently answered, the candidate is prepared for a focused, informative application.
